Dieser Ben Nevis zeigt sich noch im alten Gewand von The Coopers  Choice.
Ich mag die grelle, blau-goldene Aufmachung!

Heute geht meine Reihe unabhängig abgefüllter Whiskys weiter. Der Auftakt letzte Woche hat schon gezeigt, was Whiskys können, die nicht nach den Vorgaben eines großen Konzerns abgefüllt wurden, sondern vielmehr die Charakteristika eines Whiskys unterstreichen sollen. Heute geht es zu einem schottischen Abfüller, der schon eine längere Tradition vorweisen kann. Auch ist es keiner der ganz "kleinen" Abfüller, sondern schon ein Schwergewicht in der Szene. Die Rede ist von: The Malt Whisky Company.

Über den Abfüller: 

Viele von euch werden den Namen "Vintage Malt Whisky Company" noch nicht gehört haben. Allerdings dürfte einigen der Name "The Coopers Choice" bekannt sein. Nun streng genommen ist Coopers Choice die Serie und Vintage Malt Whisky Company die Firma, aber gut, so wichtig ist das ja nicht. Die Firma wurde 1992 von Brian Crook gegründet und der deutsche Vertreter Andy McNeill ist einigen bestimmt von diversen Whiskymessen bekannt. Wie viele Abfüller werden unter dem Label "The Coopers Choice" nur Premium-Whisky abgefüllt. Allerdings nicht immer in Fassstärke, mindestens aber mit 46% Alkohol. Finlaggan gehört übrigens auch in diesen Konzern.

Über den Whisky: Der heutige Whisky ist ein 1995 gebrannter Ben Nevis. Auf der Flasche steht die Information, dass der Whisky zwar 2014 abgefüllt wurde aber dennoch "nur" 18 Jahre alt ist. Für die Reifung wurde ein Refill Sherry Fass verwendet. Die Fassnummer lautet 492 und es muss sich um ein relativ großes Fass gehandelt haben, immerhin hat es noch 456 Flaschen preisgegeben.

Ben Nevis ist der Name des höchsten Bergs Schottlands, an dessen Fuße die gleichnamige Brennerei 1825 gegründet wurde. Von 1986 bis 1990 ruhte die Produktion, seitdem wird aber wieder dauerhaft Whisky gebrannt. Von der Brennerei selbst gibt es regelmäßig nur wenig Whisky, meistens gibt es nur einen 10 Jahre alten Whisky zu erwerben. Allerdings ist die Anzahl an unabhängig abgefüllten Ben Nevis deutlich größer.

Nase: Lecker! Fruchtig und malzig. Erinnert mich an meinen extrem malzigen Assam Tee zum Frühstück. Dazu Pfirsich und Nektarine, der Whisky riecht nach wirklich reifen Früchten. Vanille ist in der Süße kaum zu verspüren, rundet den Geruch aber etwas ab (man denke an Kompott mit einer Vanillestange). Etwas Frisches ist nach einiger Zeit auch noch da, vielleicht leicht minzig, aber vor allem ein Gefühl in der Nase. Der Whisky hat halt doch 55% Alkohol. Mit etwas Abstand zum Glas könnte ich auch auf grünen Apfel tippen.

Geschmack: Um es vorweg zu nehmen: Beim Geschmack scheiden sich in meinem Freundeskreis die Geister. Ich habe diesen Whisky gegen einen anderen Ben Nevis ertauscht, meinem Freund war dieser hier zu "durcheinander" und wenig harmonisch. Ich kann diese Einschätzung gar nicht teilen. Das Fass ist im Geschmack zu merken, leichte holzige Schwere macht sich relativ schnell im Mund breit. Für mich ist der Geschmack gesetzt und die Reifezeit ist deutlich spürbar. Aber was dann kommt habe ich so noch nie erlebt: saftige Orange, Blutorange, Orangensaft! Boah! Wie lecker! Fruchtig, tropisch mit einem Hauch Honigsüße, dazu dann wieder die holzige Note. Wie kann man diesen Whisky nicht mögen?! Gemälzte Gerste und etwas Hefe sind auch dabei. Wasser tut ihm nicht so gut, ich mag ihn pur am liebsten.

Finish: Vielleicht der schwächste Teil... Nach der tollen Säure/Süße aus dem Geschmack, bleibt im Finish eine säuerliche Note übrig. Limette oder Zitrone, eine deutliche Zitrussäure. Hier kann ich verstehen, dass es nicht jedermanns Geschmack ist. Auch ist der Abgang leider etwas kurz.

Abschließende Gedanken: Zugegeben, ein gewöhnungsbedürftiger Whisky und bestimmt nicht für jeden so lecker wie für mich. Ich persönlich liebe ihn! Ja, etwas mehr Tiefgang wäre gut. Ja, das Finish ist etwas kurz. Aber diese Orangennote! Dieser Ben Nevis zeigt auf jeden Fall eins ganz klar: Unabhängig abgefüllte Whiskys können die Extreme bedienen, die eine "normale" Abfüllung lieber ausschließen will.

Heute probiere ich mal möglichst objektiv zu bewerten..

The Coopers Choice

About the independent bottler: Well, actually the companies name is "Vintage Malt Whisky Company", but I think we are all more familiar with The Coopers Choice. Just to add: yes, they do also own and bottle the "Finlaggan" malt series.
Vintage Malt Company was founded in 1992 by Brian Crook, so they can look back at quite some experience in bottling malts. The Coopers Choice malts are always unchill filtered and natural colour. But some of them are cask strength and others are 46% ABV. Make sure to look out for that.

About the whisky: Ben Nevis was founded in 1825 at  Fort William in the scottish Highlands. It is named after Britains highest mountain at which base it is located. Ben Nevis was closed from 1986 to 1990 and started producing whisky again in 1991. There is only a 10 year old readily available, but there are plenty of alternatives among independent bottlings.

This Ben Nevis was destilled in 1995 and bottled after 18 full years of maturation in 2014. It has been matured in a refill sherry butt (#492). 456 bottles of whisky were left after the angels took their share and it is bottled at 55% ABV, I guess, that is cask strength.

Nose: Yummy! Fruity and malty. Reminds me of my very malty assam breakfast tea. Then there is peach and nectarine. This whisky smells of ripe fruits. There is some vanilla in it as well, but very restrained. Reminds me of stewed fruit with just a little touch of vanilla. If you nose it with a distance to the glass there is green apple and some mint as well, it is bottled at 55% ABV after all. 

Taste: To be honest with you: I really like this one. And not all of my friends do! So please proceed with caution!

There is some oakiness and heavyness to it at first. I think, that it shows its age rather well. And then it starts: Oranges, oranges, blood oranges and again some oranges. I love it, it is like sour orange juice with alcohol. Some honey sweetness as well and oak again. Some malted barley and yeast. I wouldn't recommend adding water to it. What is not to like here?

Finish: Well, I have to admit, this has to be the weakest part of this malt. A sour and oaky note remains on the tongue after the fireworks of oranges before. I can understand that not everyone likes this. Lime and citrus fruits / sour notes just stay too dominant. Rather short as well.

Final Thoughts: This whisky is a perfect example of what independent bottlers can do: They can bottle whiskys that the big companies (or distilleries) don't want to sell (or maybe they are afraid of trying?). This isn't a mainstream whisky. This whisky has its edges and isn't made for the majority of whisky drinkers. But that is what I like, and what my friends like as well, even if they don't enjoy the taste of this one. I would give this 7/7. But for the sake of objectivity, let's give it:
